Xenon, with the chemical symbol Xe and atomic number 54, is a noble gas discovered in 1898 by British scientists Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers. The name "xenon" is derived from the Greek word "xenos," meaning "foreign" or "strange."

On Earth, xenon is exceptionally rare, constituting only about 0.000009 ppm of the Earth's crust. It is primarily formed through the radioactive decay of heavy elements and is obtained during the extraction of air gases from the atmosphere.

Xenon has fascinating applications in various fields. In lighting technology, it is utilized in gas discharge lamps such as flash lamps and neon signs. In medicine, xenon serves as a safe and efficient anesthetic gas due to its rapid onset and quick elimination from the body, particularly advantageous for short medical procedures.

In the context of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, xenon played a significant role. Radioactive isotopes of xenon, particularly Xenon-133 and Xenon-135, were released during the reactor accident. Xenon-135 is crucial because of its strong neutron absorption capability. During the accident, Xenon-135 absorbed a substantial number of neutrons, contributing to a temporary weakening of the chain reaction and aiding in stabilizing the reactor.
