The quartz tubes (made from high purity quartz) for this fluorine ampoules were heated to 800°C in a vacuum better than 0.001mbar to ensure that all water from the quartz is removed. Afterwards the ampoules were filled with pure fluorine in a university laboratory fluorine line. Afterwards the ampoules were sealed within a few seconds to ensure that no significant reaction between the fluorine and the high purity quartz takes place. Although we have pure fluorine, you cannot see any color, as fluorine has a really pale yellow color (about 10 times less intensive than chlorine). You would need an ampoule with more than 50cm diameter to clearly see the color (see Burdon1987: “Is fluorine gas really yellow”). As far as we know, these are the only available fluorine ampoules in the world.
Fluorine, with the chemical symbol F, is a highly reactive halogen and the 13th most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It was first isolated in 1886 by the French chemist Henri Moissan, who obtained it from fluorite. Fluorine occurs in nature in the form of fluorite minerals and constitutes about 0.06% of the Earth's crust.
Due to its high reactivity, fluorine finds diverse applications. It is an essential component in the production of fluorocarbons used as refrigerants, solvents, and in plastic manufacturing. Dentists utilize fluoridated water and toothpaste to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities.
